8.1" Polished Striped Flint Slab - Poland

This is an 8.1" wide polished slab of striped flint, collected from the Swietokrzyskie Mountains of Poland. This form of flint is considered rare and typically displays a beautiful banded and striped pattern, hence its use today in jewelry. It is Upper Jurassic in age, meaning it was deposited roughly 160 million years ago.

This specimen comes with an acrylic display stand.

Striped flint, also known as "banded flint", is a cryptocrystalline variety of quartz that forms as a sedimentary within limestone. Often it exhibits concentric banding of which can vary in color, however the colors are typically various hues of brown. It's believed to have formed by deposition of silica directly from seawater.
