5.9" Tall, Polished Carnelian Agate With Cut Base - Madagascar

This is a vibrantly colored, hand polished piece of carnelian agate, collected from Madagascar. This beautiful piece is 5.9" tall by 4.2" wide with fiery hues of red, yellows and oranges. The base has been cut flat so it can be displayed without the use of a stand.

Unfortunately there are some cracks in this agate specimen that have been filled with what looks to be a transparent epoxy. However the filling was for stability and polishing purposes.

Carnelian is a semi-precious stone consisting of an orange or orange-red variety of chalcedony/agate. It's name is believed to come from the Latin word carneus, meaning 'flesh colored'. The reddish color is due to the presence of iron oxide impurities in the silica which makes up the chalcedony.

Carnelian is one of the oldest known gemstones. It was widely used in ancient Rome to make insignia and seals for imprinting on letters or important documents because hot wax does not stick to carnelian.
