3.5" Polished Brazilian Agate Standup - Druzy Quartz

This is a beautiful, cut and polished brazilian agate. The base has been cut flat so that it's stands up nicely on a flat surface for display. The center of the ages is hollow and filled with small clear quartz crystals. The coloration of all of the agates we sell in natural, not dyed like many agates from brazil.

Agate is a translucent variety of microcrystalline quartz. Agate generally forms by the deposition of silica from groundwater in hollow cavities of volcanic rocks. The coloration of agates is due to other minerals present in the silica.

Agate has also been known to fill veins or cracks in volcanic rock. Such agates, when cut transversely, exhibit a succession of parallel line giving a banded appearance to the section. Such stones are known as banded agate, riband agate and striped agate.

The agates from Brazil are mined from decomposed volcanic ash and basalt from the late Permian age (248-275 million years old) In Rio Grande do Sul the "agate mines" are normally just plowed fields in which loose agates are found and collected. These agates can be very colorful and polish beautifully.
