3.3" Fulgurite - "Petrified Lightning"

This fulgurite measures 3.3" long and was collected from the Sahara Desert in Morocco.

These unusual natural formations get their name from ‘fulgur’, the Latin word for lightning. They form when lightning strikes damp sand, which conducts electricity. The electricity superheats the sand and rapidly cools, forming a delicate glassy tube structure composed of nearly pure silicon dioxide. The whole process can take less than a second.
