Two Detailed Fossil Leaves (Zizyphoides & Davidia) - Montana

This plate features detailed fossil leaves of Zizyphoides flabellum and two of Davidia antiqua from the Fort Union Formation of Montana. It is from the Paleocene, or approximately 60 million years old. The dark orange preservation contrasts well against the lighter shale, and all the veins of the leaves can be seen in good relief. There may be some touchups to the surface of the leaves where some of it flaked onto the negative during collection.

The leaves are labeled by numbered red stickers which can be found in a picture above. The leaves labeled with a 5 are of the species Davidia antiqua, one of which measures 3" long and the other 2.2" wide. The small leaf labeled by a 1 is the Zizyphoides flabellum leaf, which measures 1.65" long (including stem). It comes with an acrylic display stand.
