14.6" Polished Petrified Palm Wood Round - Indonesia

This is a 14.6" wide, polished round of petrified palm wood (Palmoxylon sp.) from Sumatra, Indonesia. The vascular nature of root means that traditional tree rings are replaced by pores and channels. A unique feature of this specimen is the pocket of botryoidal chalcedony that's interrupted by a wall of waterline agate, giving an idea of the orientation of the log as it preserved. It has been flawlessly polished to a glossy finish on one side to show off the stunning internal structures and spots of pyrite/marcasite.

Comes with an acrylic-metal display stand.

Petrified palmwood includes a group of fossil woods that contain rod-like structures within the regular grain of the silicified or agatized wood. Depending upon the angle at which they are cut, these structures show up as spots, tapering rods, or continuous lines. The rod-like structures are sclerenchyma bundles that comprise part of the woody tissues that gave the wood its vertical strength.
