1.6" Permian Amphibian (Branchiosaur) Fossil - Germany

This is a 1.6" fossil of a Branchiosaur, a primitive amphibian during the Permian period, some 280 million years ago. They are preserved as a carbon film on the shale, usually with just the skull and vertebrae preserving. This one has a skull, vertebrae column and partial limbs. A coating of sealant has been applied to the top of it.

Branchiosaurs were likely semi aquatic and represent one of first animals to move onto the land. It was collected from the Pfalz region of Germany. The region has been closed permanently to collecting for several decades, so the amount of material left on the market is dwindling.
