2.1" Polished, Apache Gold (Chalcopyrite) Slab - Arizona

This is a beautiful, polished "apache gold" slab, collected from the United Verde Mine in Jerome, Arizona. The chalcopyrite can be noted by its brassy metallic luster and the black portions of the slab are chlorite schist. It comes with an acrylic display stand.

Apache gold is the name for a combination of black schist and chalcopyrite. It formed when Copper sulfides became buried beneath accumulating volcanic materials. The combination of heat, pressures and hydrothermal activity caused the rocks and ores to become metamorphosed.

Chalcopyrite is a brass-yellow colored mineral and an important copper ore. When weathered, chalcopyrite loses its metallic luster, turning a gray-green color. When exposed to acids, the tarnish can develop a red, blue, or purple iridescence: this acid-treated material is often sold under the name peacock ore.
