1.5" Tyrannosaur Tooth With Crocodile Scute - Judith River Formation

This is a very nice 1.5" Tyrannosaur tooth and a Crocodilian (Leidyosuchus) scute, in the rock it was found in, from the Judith River Formation, Montana. This specimen also contains a shell and bone and tooth fragments that are best seen under magnification. This is a nicely preserved tooth with excellent enamel. The serrations nearly perfect on both edges.

Scutes are hard bony plates that cover the body of crocodilians and protect them. They are easiest seen on tails of modern alligators as bony projections running down the top of the tail.

There is a repaired crack with some stabilization to the fossil.

Three species of tyrannosaur have been described from the Two Medicine & Judith River Formations: Albertosaurus, Gorgosaurus and Daspletosaurus. Research done on teeth from these three tyrannosaurs has concluded that isolated teeth are statistically impossible to assign to a specific genus because they are so similar.
