Nice, 2" Kolihapeltis Trilobite - Rare Species

This is a nicely prepared, example of a rare, spiny trilobite from Morocco, Kolihapeltis chlupaci hollardi. It would be over 2" long if outstretched, but the body is distorted. This is a very elegant trilobite with long, flowing spines and great shell coloration. You can even see hundreds of tiny eye facets preserved in each eye. It's nicely centered on a large, 6.5 x 5.2" piece of limestone. Despite the curve in the body you rarely see examples of this rare species this nice.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
