Large, 3" Stalk-Eyed Asaphus Kowalewskii Trilobite - Russia
This is a 3" long (if outstretched), stalk-eyed trilobite Asaphus kowalewskii. It is Middle Ordovician in age and was collected at the Vilpovitsy quarry in the St. Petersburg region of Russia. The stalk eyes likely allowed to survey it's surroundings while remaining buried in the mud.
At over 3" long this specimen is very large for the species. It's partially enrolled and compared to many of the asaphids from these quarries it has minimal shell restoration.
