Bargain, 2.45" Spiny Ceratonurus Trilobite

This is one of the more unusual of the spiny trilobites from Morocco, Ceratonurus. It is good sized for the species at 2.45" long and many of the spines have been prepared free standing. This species is similar to the Ceratonurus found in Oklahoma but grows substantially larger.

The preparation is a bit rough in some areas and there is a bit of separation in the thorax hence the bargain price. Restoration is limited to some touchups of airscribe dings, along the repaired crack and some matrix work.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
