5.8" Pennsylvanian Scale Tree (Lepidodendron) Fossil Plate - Kentucky

This is a 5.8" wide plate with a fossil scale tree (Lepidodendron sp.) limb section, collected from the Breathitt Formation in Leslie County, Kentucky. Lepidodendron is a genus of extinct, primitive, vascular, tree-like plants most closely related to gill worts and and club mosses, that grew up to 98ft (30 m) and had trunks 3.2ft (1 m) in diameter. It is from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Eastern Kentucky and Ohio.

There are some faint Lepidodendron leaflets preserved alongside the limb, as well as what appears to be a Neuropteris leaflet. It comes with an acrylic display stand.
