3.25" Asaphus Kotlukovi Trilobite - Russia

This is a prone, 3.25" long Asaphus kotlukovi from the St. Petersburg region of Russia. The brown shell contrasts nicely with the light colored limestone and it has been prepared so that it looks like it is ready to crawl off the rock.

Like nearly all the trilobites from these quarries there is some shell restoration as the shell tends to flake when the rock is broken during collection. Most of this restoration is along repaired cracks running lengthwise through the body. It looks like about 10% in total.

Trilobites were a very diverse group of extinct marine arthropods. They first appeared in the fossil record in the Early Cambrian (521 million years ago) and went extinct during the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago). They were one of the most successful of the early animals on our planet: over 25,000 species have been described, filling nearly every evolutionary niche. Due in large part to their hard exoskeletons (shells), they left an excellent fossil record.
