2.6" Pyritized Crinoid (Arthroacantha) - Sylvania, Ohio

This is an incredibly well preserved, 2.6" long, crinoid (Arthroacantha) from the Silica Shale of Ohio. There crinoids were collected some time ago all of the quarries have been off limits to collectors for many years, due to liability reasons. This crinoid has been well prepared shows the calyx (body), brachia (arms) and pinnules (feeding filters) in great detail.

Comes with an acrylic stand.

Crinoids, sometimes commonly referred to as sea lilies, are animals, not plants. They are echinoderms related to starfish, sea urchins, and brittle stars. Many crinoid traits are like other members of their phylum; such traits include tube feet, radial symmetry, a water vascular system, and appendages in multiples of five (pentameral). They first appeared in the Ordovician (488 million years ago) and some species are still alive today.
