2" Fossil Ammonite (Dieneroceras) - Idaho

This is a 2.0" ammonite (Dieneroceras) from the Thaynes Formation of Idaho. It is in good condition with some of the rock in which it was found, remaining near the opening.

This ammonite comes out of an old fossil collection we recently purchased with a lot of unique material from unusual and often no longer accessible sites.

Ammonites were predatory cephalopod mollusks that resembled squids with spiral shells. They are more closely related to living octopuses, though their shells resemble that of nautilus species. True ammonites appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The last lineages disappeared 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous.
