17" Southern Mammoth Partial Mandible with M3 Molar - Hungary

This is a 17" long, lower jaw half (left side - anatomically) of a mammoth complete with a beautifully preserved M3 molar in its socket. It would have come from a sub-adult mammoth and the molar measures about 9.6" long.

There are two repaired cracks through the M2 molar, one of which required some minor gap fill restoration. The molar is from this jaw section, however it has been glued (stabilized) back into place. The mandible bone was found fractured in multiple pieces, also requiring crack repair and gap fill restoration in spots.

Mammuthus meridionalis, or the southern mammoth, is an extinct species of mammoth endemic to Europe and central Asia from the Gelasian stage of the Early Pleistocene, living from 2.5 to 1.5 million years ago. M. meridionalis is one of the largest proboscideans to have ever lived, estimated about 4 meters (13 feet) tall and weighing 8 to 10 tons. Its molars had low crowns and a small number of thick enamel ridges, adapted to a woodland diet of leaves and shrubs. This indicates it lived in a relatively warm climate and probably lacked the dense fur of the more recent Woolly Mammoth.
