10.1" Petrified Wood (Beech) Slab - Deschutes River, Oregon
This is a beautiful, 10.1" wide petrified wood (Beech) slab from near the Deschutes River in Oregon. It's part of a large collection of petrified wood I recently purchased from an old collection that includes some exceptionally nice specimens from a variety of locations. This piece is nicely polished on one side and shows beautiful wood grain detail.
Comes with an acrylic display stand.
Petrified wood is the name given to wood that has been turned into stone (fossilized) through the process of permineralization. All of the organic matter becomes replaced by minerals, while much of the original structure such as tree rings in retained. For this to happen the wood needs to be buried in an environment both low in oxygen (preventing decomposition) and with flowing mineral laden water.
