Pennsylvanian Fern (Neuropteris) - Kentucky

This is a 1.7" fossil seed fern (Neuropteris), from the Breathitt Formation, Leslie County, Kentucky. This is two pinnules (branch of leaflets) from the main stem of a fern. It comes from the Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian aged forests that formed the coal shales of Kentucky and Ohio. This is a uniquely colored specimen.

Neuropteris is genus of seed fern, extinct species of fern that reproduced from seed as opposed to sporophyte reproduction of most modern ferns.
